Microprocessor based overcurrent relay

Power industry is now making best use of microprocessors and microcontrollers. Microprocessor based relay is a classical example for that. This relay system starts its operation whenever the circuit current exceeds the predetermined value. A multiplexer is used by the microprocessor to sense the fault currents in the circuit. Before this current is converted into voltage signal by a converter and a rectifier. From multiplexer, voltage signal reaches analog to digital converter and then to microprocessor. Now the microprocessor sends command signals for switching ON the desired channel of the multiplexer in order to obtain the rectified voltage in the circuit. Analog to digital converter is used to generate digital signals.
